Raleigh County United for Prevention partners with schools, healthcare providers, and community organizations to deliver evidence-based prevention education programs across our community. Through collaboration and strategic outreach, we equip youth, families, and educators with the tools needed to reduce substance use and promote lifelong wellness.
Evidence-Based Prevention in Schools
The Beckley Police Department is proud to bring the updated D.A.R.E. program, keepin’ it REAL, to fifth grade classrooms across Raleigh County. This modern, evidence-based curriculum moves beyond traditional lectures to focus on real-life skills, helping students make safe choices through effective communication, confident decision-making, and positive peer interactions. By working together, Beckley Police Department is empowering young people, strengthening trust, and building a safer, healthier Raleigh County for the future.
Raleigh County Sheriff’s Department plans to implement D.A.R.E by 2026-2027 school year.
Safe Prescription Use Awareness
The Generation Rx program is helping to raise awareness about the importance of using prescription medications safely. The program focuses on education, open conversation, and practical strategies to prevent misuse at every age level. By combining healthcare expertise with community outreach, Raleigh County UP and Beckley ARH are working together to reduce prescription drug misuse, encourage responsible decision-making, and strengthen the overall health and well-being of Raleigh County residents.
Vaping Prevention for Youth
CATCH My Breath is a proven, evidence-based vaping prevention program tailored for middle and early high school students. This curriculum helps students understand that e-cigarettes are addictive and unhealthy, exposes the tricks of marketing aimed at youth, and develops concrete refusal and exit strategies when they are offered vaping products. Through partnership with Beckley ARH, we are able to provide a Train-the-Trainer option, so educators, community leaders, and peer facilitators become certified to deliver the program directly to their schools and organizations. West Virginia’s Tobacco Taskforce statewide initiative to implement CATCH My Breath in every middle school is building momentum in Raleigh County, and we are committed to helping expand that reach locally. In 2024, every school counselor in Raleigh County was trained to implement this curriculum. We aim to equip young people with knowledge, skills, and confidence to create a vape-free culture for the future of Raleigh County.
Promoting Health Equity Through Tobacco Prevention
The West Virginia African American Tobacco Prevention Network is committed to building a healthier, more equitable future by reducing the impact of tobacco use in African American communities. Through education, advocacy, and culturally focused outreach, we empower individuals and families to make informed choices and take action against tobacco-related disparities. Guided by a vision of social justice and health equity, their work strives to ensure every African American in West Virginia has the opportunity to live free from the harms of tobacco. Education sessions include, Tobacco Prevention and Cessation, Breaking the Chains of Tobacco: Empowering Faith-Based Communities to Combat Tobacco Disparities and harmful effects of tobacco.
